The lottery win was a welcome change after months of bad luck.
‘Its fate,’ Annie told her son, Daniel. ‘Our new beginning, like the fortune teller said.’
When she asked her son what he most wanted, Daniel said: ‘A giant garden. With lots of room to play football. And loads of trees to climb.’
She found the perfect house but waited till Monday. After all, anything bought on Saturday only brought trouble.
But now, Daniel was biting his lip and trembling. He couldn’t take his eyes off the gate. There were upside down hearts on it! Surely they must mean something very terrible indeed …
