Thoughts on a January Day

The birds sing more enthusiastically today
though spring is still some time away.
Sharp air softens, first buds
on apple trees appear,
and tulip bulbs push green stems
through the wakening earth.

The garden calls; there is so much to be done
but I must wait for the frosts of winter to be gone.
