Oh well ….

The blackbird and I are going to have words.

This last month I watched

the gooseberries grow plumper,

tasted them every now and then

to test their sweetness,

brought three bags of sugar

home from the supermarket,

carefully washed the jam pots,

wrote plenty of labels,

went into the garden with children in tow

to gather the main ingredient,

only to find  branches that yesterday

were weighed down with fruit

are now stripped clean

with no evidence

that gooseberries ever grew there.

The blackbird and I are going to have words.
